How does the Prophetic Dance & Creative Arts "fit" into regular Sunday Worship?
The Creative Arts, Dance and Prophecy is the kind of phrase that will
either catch your attention or irk you up the wrong way making you roll
your eyeballs to the ceiling. You know what I mean, right? Anyway
regardless of your reaction, this subject needs to be addressed in these
current times. Confusion, sometimes resulting in division, has worked
itself stealthily into the church because many do not know how to fit
this ‘new wine’ into the order of worship. Nor do they know how to
explain this ‘move of God’ to the ‘old guards’. While some leaders are
trying to be diplomatic, understanding, tolerating, and even
accommodating, others outright reject this whole ‘prophetic pandemonium
thing’ ignoring it long enough, hoping it will all dissipate.
Concerning prophecy, I personally think that too much attention has been
placed on the method of delivery and we miss what God is trying to say.
Besides, He is a creative God and He can do whatever He pleases, use
whomever He pleases and choose whichever method of delivery He pleases.
Pause for a moment and focus on God, the Creator of the whole universe;
the Heavenly Father; the Almighty One wanting to speak to us! Trust me,
the method of delivery will not only be overshadowed, it will be of no
importance. When we have leaders who spend literally hours discussing
whether the congregation should stand or sit when singing a certain
song, I shrink at the thought of them trying to decide how God’s message
ie: prophecy should be delivered.
Many have asked if prophetic dance is necessary and my reply always has
been “No.” It is not necessary; however, if God wants to deliver His
message through the creative arts, I won’t argue with that either. If
we can accept that dance is an international language that crosses the
barriers of the very limiting verbal languages, then why is it hard for
us to accept that God can, has been, and will continue to use this form
of media to communicate? (Refer to chapter 2 for a more in-depth
discussion)
If you have a dance ministry in your church, it is inevitable that
someone in the group will have this ‘nudging’ from the Holy One to dance
prophetically. Is this not one of the reasons why you have a dance
team, to train them to be sensitive to God and to do His bidding? Yes, I
agree that they need to be taught the Word of God and I do hope that
this is the foundation of all ministries. I also hope that the dance
team in your church was not started just for ‘entertainment’ purposes,
to do a special item every now and then to keep the ‘art-see’ people in
your church happy so that you can keep their tithes. If your dance
ministry was started with solid teaching, they will mature to desire to
be used of God and it could be releasing a prophetic dance when He says
so.
This, by the way, is not limited to the dance ministry alone. It can
happen in other ministries too. For example, one or two out of all the
singers on the worship team will probably be led to prophesy. The Holy
Spirit may use one or two instruments out of the whole band of musicians
to release a prophetic sound. One or more in a prophetic team might get
the mind of the Lord concerning the ‘happenings’ in the year to come.
The point is that God can release prophecy through various forms and
means, and so all ministries in the church need to be geared and ready
to function prophetically in their specific roles. God has already set
an example in that He did not just verbalize His intentions for His plan
of salvation for us to return to Him, He demonstrated His message in
The Divine Drama – His greatest prophetic act.
